8 That the horrors in this movie are worse than those found in the lives of most 13-year-olds, I believe and hope.

8 It's an excellent, unforgettable film, one of the prize American indies of the year.

9 With realistic filmmaking, realistic dialogue and realistic performances, the film's so...well, real...that it could be frightening for parents in the crowd.

5 As impressively complex as it is, Thirteen is nevertheless hampered by its schizophrenic mannerisms.

8 Director Catherine Hardwicke...uses a modest budget to great effect.

The plausibility of everything in this movie makes it gripping. Some of the weight might be lost on you if you're not a parent. Worth seeing but don't go out of your way.

After School Special material gussied up with indie-style camerawork and Holly Hunter. It's under 2 hours, at least, but it's not good.

not too far from the really messed up lives of some kids that i've met. the roving freedoms that the kids enjoy gives me pause, and stretches the limits of plausibility at times. it's netflixable for a slow night.

I can't happen but ponder if the director feels special making the frame brighter as the girl gets worse --or something like that. But Thirteen is nothing but unrealisitc manerisms and flamboyant character develpment geared at an "oh-so-destined future." Worth a DVD rental as best.
