3 ...a colossal miscalculation, a movie based on a premise that cannot support it, a premise so transparent it would be laughable were the movie not so deadly solemn.

6 ...a big, creepy dollhouse of a movie--a sometimes engrossing shocker with a surprise ending that isn't especially shocking or surprising.

7 ...it can be an experience that tries your patience, but it'll undoubtedly have you talking about it to your friends once it's over.

4 Shyamalan's portentous period thriller wrings a few thrills from cliched elements, but collapses under the weight of an unsatisfying ending.

6 ...has the hermetic quality of a talented filmmaker bouncing ideas off the inside of his own skull.

4 The film's ridiculousness would not be so irksome if Mr. Shyamalan did not take his sleight of hand so seriously, if he did not insist on dressing this scary, silly, moderately clever fairy tale in a somber cloak of allegory.

4 It's tedious instead of provocative and so unconvincing as to be preposterous.

4 ...this undeniably talented writer-director has been repeating himself with steadily decreasing potency ever since the wonderful The Sixth Sense, and his latest excursion does nothing to buck the trend.

4 ...it's a film a White House full of evangelicals could've written, given a little prodding, a little pot, and a day-long Twilight Zone marathon.

3 We get it. You like to craft surprise endings. But would it be too much to ask for a decent movie to go along with them?

5 This gothic thriller is regrettably about as terrifying as an episode of PBS's Frontier House.

I can see why people (especially "fans") didn't particularly like this film however, I'm not among them. Rich in its visuals, performances that snap (and a marvelous one by Howard), great tension built without cheap frights, and a provocative story add up to a film that I enjoyed very much. (And I did check my brain at the door.., all the more fun that way!)

Turn off your brain and you'll enjoy it more. Do not, repeat, DO NOT attempt to figure out Shyamalans twist or you'll ruin the movie for yourself. This one is much more transparent than the others and much less of a movie without the "twist".

Not a typical Horror flick. Please all that are intending to view this movie, do not expect it to scare your pants off., this flick actually has a plot. Try wtaching the movie for it rather than for an adrenaline rush. Greast twists and even better visuals. Love this director too.

Excellent twist! The overall fright factor was somewhat non-existent for me, but the ending is typical Shyamalan, tying the whole story together, leaving you smacking your head going, wow.....it all makes sense.....

Horror? In what way? Lot's of skinned animals and half glimpses of something in a red cloak does not a horror movie make. Interesting ending though.
