9 Guy Maddin's latest extravaganza, improbably adapted from an original screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro, is the best Big Broadcast ever—a stompin' mishmash, 100 minutes of demented vaudeville and murky montage, spasmodic violence and even splatter.

7 The film's irreverent goof on Depression-era Winnipeg fires off hilariously eccentric one-liners and makes the most of Maddin's Cuisinart mesh of vintage silent-movie effects.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't get Maddin. Some very funny bits in amongst a lot of boring crap.

Too quirky, we turned it off.

It gets points for style. It was amusing to watch, but not enough substance to finish it. After I got the gimmick I didn't feel the need to finish it.
