9 ...a damn fine thriller. It does all the things I can't stand in bad movies, and does them in a good one.

7 ...satisfies a basic human taste -- something to go with the popcorn. I liked it. It knows what it's doing.

3 Overly complex characters, poorly edited action bits and a pileup of ludicrous twists leave this flick a flavorless mess.

8 ...director Phillip Noyce is not the first name you think of when it comes to reinventing the thriller, but Salt tries...and triumphs.

5 ...contains many conflicts: intelligence vs. counterintelligence, blond Angelina vs raven-haired and . . . well, that’s about it.

4 ...a banal, humorless action thriller that's intermittingly enlivened by Jolie's quintessential ferocity.

7 The movie is fun, dammit. So who cares, really, if it's trash?

5 Ms. Jolie’s contribution is to endow the silliness with a gravity and clarity of purpose that makes you care, for a scant hour and a half, who Salt is, what she does and where she stands. Not that she stands for much, or stays still for very long.

7 ...who goes to summer action movies for cast-iron logic anyway? Or for plausible characters, for that matter? You go for brisk stunts expertly executed, for well-directed action that doesn't allow you to catch your breath and for one of the preeminent action stars of our time. Yes, that would be Angelina Jolie.

8 Highly satisfying, often exhilarating, refreshingly unpretentious...

7 Jolie’s commanding presence mostly helps keep laughs at bay -- her slightly inhuman glamour works in her favor here -- but Salt’s mechanical command of action is what makes it one of the most entertaining films of a summer thin on its once-abundant variety of cheap thrills.

7 ...a high-octane action thriller.

5 ...a brisk, professionally assembled but finally shrug-inducing thriller...

While preposterous at every turn, Salt is a better Bond movie than most recent Bond movies, as its makers keep the stunts real and severely limit CGI gimmickry

A few good action sequences, and the acting is spectacular (anyone who dismisses Jolie as an actress is seriously missing something). But the whole thing requires far too much suspension of disbelief. It's based on a couple of premises that I just couldn't buy, try though I might. The complexity of the plot has no basis in reality, but is rather a pretty transparent attempt to make the whole thing interesting. It doesn't work.
