Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez present two full-length movies in a new horror double feature. There's a amputee chick with a machine-gun prosthesis.
Rated R for strong graphic bloody violence and gore, pervasive language, some sexuality, nudity and drug use
Directed by: Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez
Starring: Kurt Russell, Rose McGowan, Rosario Dawson, Freddy Rodriguez, Vanessa Ferlito, Josh Brolin, Jordan Ladd, Marley Shelton, Rose
On balance, it's quite a deal for $11 - a veritable smorgasbord of decapitations, impalings, attempted rapes, car chases, explosions, good and bad acting and well-endowed women in very short shorts.
It's disaffected and campy, but unlike a lot of those sleazy exploitation movies that stood the test of time, it lacks any real anger, machismo, or even sleaziness. In other words, it's difficult to invest in anything that's happening beyond regarding it as one big gooey lark.
...a double dose of lowdown, dirty, blood-splattering fun that pummels you with sluts, slashers, serial killers, zombies and killer cars that all serve to reveal a soul of the purest scuzz.
...so richly evocative is Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse of an earlier generation's guilty cinematic pleasures that you can practically feel the stick of dried soda under your sneakers and smell the faint aroma of bum emanating from the row behind you.
Go wasted, go stoned, go without your parents' permission. In paying homage to an obsolete form of movie culture, Grindhouse delivers a dropkick to ours.
...contains thrills to keep viewers in their seats, plus moments to think about on the ride home, which will probably seem unusually fraught with peril.
...is this three-hour-plus extravaganza is a genuine formalist coup, or just a case of indie moguls indulging their favorite sons in an elaborate in-joke? That's a question a review can't really answer. I must say, as much as I enjoyed much of it, I hope Grindhouse doesn't start any trends.

I really enjoyed "Planet Terror." Contrary to what most critics thought, "Death Proof" is a 5 at best (and I am a huge Tarantino fan). Unfortunately the very best part of the 3+ hour experience is the opening trailer, for "Machete." Go ahead and make *that* movie fellas!

At over three hours long this grindhouse double feature, complete with vintage filler and mock trailers, is a feast. First Robert Rodriguez entertains then Quentin Tarantino adds another jewel to the road movie crown.

I agree w/ Dack about "machete." Danny Trejo needs his own over-the-top action vehicle. He would be bad ass (would be? IS!) Planet Terror was the better of the two, though that chase scene in Death proof totally had me on the edge of my seat. no CGI car chase. Neat-o. There have been better car chases, to be sure, but still.

I loved this! I would take Planet Terror over Death Proof but the car chase was excellent. All of the pops and scratches and melted frames helped make this.
