Who would have thought that the director of the violent revenge flick Mad Max would go on to create some of the most charming children's films since Walt Disney?
...is a familiar story about a wee outsider forced to struggle against the usual odds and misguided adults to discover his inner penguin. Yet tucked inside this nominally feel-good jukebox musical with its crooning and swooning critters is a piercingly sad story about the devastation being visited on the natural world.
It's a gorgeously rendered marvel that pulls out all the stops to wow its viewers, but in spite of its crowd-pleasing ploys, it holds onto its integrity with a smart and surprisingly deep story.

Mindless Entertainment at its Best
If you want to go to the movies, laugh your butt off, and leave without having to ponder or think about the movie, Happy Feet is the movie for you. The central characters are funny, and have well cast voiceovers. The plot, however, leaves much to be desired. When looking at the bigger picture, the movie can be summarized as a lone penguin that searches for the source of the fish shortage, in an attempt to be accepted by his friends and family. However, the movie really focuses on musically and physically talented penguins.
Not to say that this isn't entertaining. The computer animation is quite spectacular at parts, and the scenery is very realistic, as opposed to Finding Nemo, or some such, where all the animation intentionally looks like rubber or clay. The penguins, while not as realistic as they could be, are very funny and incredibly entertaining. The movie has tap dancing, singing, concerts, and a bunch of Latino penguins quoting Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back." All in all, it has all the makings of a good children's movie, and can appeal to an older crowd as well. While not a movie that you'll see at the Oscars, necessarily, and not a "Masterpiece" this movie fis a must-see if you love to laugh.
