8 The picture hasn't a single rough edge. Expositionally it's on the knotty side. Yet it's so well acted and directorially assured, Volver ("Coming Back") cancels out its own drawbacks as it glides along.

A glorious novella blown up for the big screen. Almodover is firmly in control of his pallet. Penelope Cruz turns in a technically pefect performance but despite all the tears I never got on board with her. She is lovely but distant. Because of this, while head and shoulders above the vast majority of films released these days, it is not another masterpiece from the master.

A work of Visceral and transcedental magistery that ranks among the year's best. A must see.

Pedro Almodovar, The once contemporary but at the same time masterful director returns with his new picture "Volver" which still includes his subtle obsessions such as the color red, and other minor details. Simple, yet buoyanlty and flamboyanlty understandable, "Volver" includes an all star cast including a great performance by Penélope Cruz, and other prominent actors. The film is about women, women and more women. So if you don't like them, don't see the film.

These fierce women include: Raimunda (Penélope Cruz), whose husband lusts for their daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo); her mousy sister Sole (Lola Dueñas), who runs an illegal beauty parlor out of her apartment; their mother Irene (a fearless Carmen Maura), who died in a tragic fire years ago and whose ghost tends to unfinished business, including the care of her ailing sister Irene (Chus Lampreave, wearing glasses that exaggerate the size of her eyes); and their neighbor Agustina (Blanca Portillo), whose mother, a former hippie, has been missing for years. These women help one another in times of stress and radical judgements. They all are a pleasure to look on the big screen.

Almodovar has created his own genre of films. Everytime i see or think about one of his films, i think to myself this isn't drama, it's Almodovar. "Volver" is Almodovar's heart of gold. It is almost flawless. But one thing remains clear: "Volver" definetly will add a choice to the stagnant film pool of the Oscars.

Extremely good movie of the calibre that makes you wonder why you go to Hollywood claptrap.
