Oracle 9Sly and indulgingly engrossing, "The Queen" has properties of a spectacular film
Grade: A-
The Fall season is usually the start of the good movie season; in other words the films that get nominated for the Academy Awards. And boy, might I say that we have started off the season great, with this newly anticipated film, "The Queen".
Sly and indulgingly engrossing, "The Queen" has properties of a spectacular film. I, myself, was not looking forward to "The Queen". To me the preview seemed dull, and daft, but the minute I started watching it, I was quickly proven wrong.
The picture starts with the queen(Helen Mirren) standing, as an artist who is painting her talks about Tony Blair, who has been recently elected in England. From there on the picture takes an inside out look at her life. This part of the film is where Helen Mirren leaves her extravagent remarks on screen, and where the nifty comedy is exposed.
When Princess Diana dies, is when the film goes from a strolling comedy, to an engrossing and compelling film. Helen Mirren gives one of the best as a historical figure that one will ever see. She is such a delight to watch, that when the camera is of her, one feels like the film is loosing momentum.
Even when the camera is fixed on Mirren, we still see the delight of her eyes, and her rich tone.
It is impossible to dislike "The Queen". It's sly, poignant and very well made.
Thank you, thank you Mr. Frears for starting this year off with this film.

good-o 8A true delight of a film. Mirrem= OSCAR
stevilbot 8this was a surprisingly engrossing film. i'd read a little bit on it in the NY review of books prior to seeing it and had largely forgotten about it until i saw it on a flight last week.
you get an interesting perspective on a rugged woman who is far more independent than one might expect from the royal family. especially if your impression of the royal family is driven by prince charles and his strangely emasculated nature. mom has more stones than he does.
Askransdorf 9Helen Mirren gives another oscar worthy performance, and also tour-de-force, as the queen of england after the death of princess diana. The film is clreay worth a damn. It is easily one of the best films of the year.
ppast12 6I am not very interested in Royal affairs so I may have a bias. I frankly don't care about the death of Princess Diana or all the whining that occured afterwords. I thought though, that the director made the most of the script he was given, so I would rate this film in words as ok.
sme 9Outstanding. Never doubt Frears ability to step into any story and create another brilliant movie. Truly unexpected in every area -- the humor, the poignancy, the humanism... top notch work from everyone involved.
