5 Though Aniston and Vaughn began dating on set, they strike no visible on-screen sparks and can't begin to make their characters -- a strident whiner and a self-centered boor -- appealing.

7 ...audience reaction to The Break-Up will mostly depend on how much sympathy the film's prickly lead couple...can ultimately drum up for their plight.

7 You'll laugh, you'll cry and, for the first romantic comedy in a long while, you'll relate.

3 Sadly, The Break-Up is simply an exercise in confusion. To call it erratic would be to imply there was a course it went off, but the film's intentions are impossible to fathom. It's a romantic comedy in which the romance comes stillborn and in which the comedy barely exists beyond the few moments when Vince Vaughn is set free to do the kind of free-association wordplay he's made his name on.

5 ...proves there is nothing particularly funny or charming about two people splitting up, even if the couple is played by Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston.

4 ...is about relationships, but it looks like it was made by people who have never been in one.

As dismal as War of the Roses. How can you such a fine comedic actor in Vince Vaughn and turn him into a huge downer. Don't see this movie unless you just have to depress yourself.
